Marriages that have lasted for several years can be difficult to resolve in the event of a divorce. After so many years together, a married couple likely has children, more community property in Texas and other assets that may have taken many years to develop. In family law, the dissolution of a lengthy marriage can involve a number of details.

If a couple has minor children, their interests must be protected. In addition to determining child custody - either sole managing conservatorship or joint managing conservatorship - child support payments must be determined. In many cases, child support can be calculated easily. However, there are times when complexities arise when a parent attempts to manipulate his or her income, if earnings fluctuate or if a child has special needs.

A couple may also need to determine the division of property. Texas recognizes two types of property in family law: community property and separate property. After determining which type of property is at stake, a couple can proceed with the division.

Recently, Mel Gibson finalized his divorce from his wife of over 30 years. It is very possible that each of the issues mentioned above were raised in the process. The couple has seven children together, but only one of them is a minor and subject to custody agreements.

The famous actor likely has numerous properties and assets that may have been divided, including an island in Fiji he purchased in 2005. It is also estimated that he has over $100 million in real estate investments across the world.

The couple was married prior to Gibson's successful career was launched, so they did not have a prenuptial agreement in place. His ex-wife will be receiving half of all his residual checks for the rest of his life. She reportedly received $425 million in the settlement, or half of everything he made during the course of their marriage.
