Singer Stevie Wonder has filed for divorce from his wife of 11-years, Court documents indicate that the musician and his wife separated in 2009. Now the 62-year-old singer seeks to dissolve the marriage.
The couple has two children together, a 10-year-old and a 7-year-old. Stevie wonder is seeking joint custody of his two sons in the divorce. It is unclear whether the child custody issue will bring any contest from Wonder's estranged wife, the fashion designer Kai Millard Morris.
Stevie Wonder reportedly has stated in his divorce papers that he intends to pay child support and spousal support, the amounts of support to be determined in family court. The singer was previously married to the late Motown singer Syreeta Wright. That marriage lasted eighteen months in the early 1970s.
In the most recent marriage, it is unclear whether the singer and fashion designed entered into a prenuptial agreement before their marriage in 2001(couples may also enter a post nuptial agreement after saying their vows). Prenups (or postnups) can often reduce litigation in family court should the marriage later break down.
A representative for the former child prodigy, "Little Stevie Wonder," says that the musician hopes to keep the divorce issues private. The representative issued a statement confirming that "Stevland Morris filed for divorce, ending his marriage to Kai Millard Morris." Stevland Morris is the Motown megastar's legal name.
Each state has its own laws regarding child custody and support issues, spousal support and the division of marital property. In the absence of a prenuptial agreement, high asset couple could see complex marital property division issues arise in the divorce proceedings. Issues related to children generally are determined by the best interests of the children.
